Ed - Firstly, this is not sponsored - I have purchased all of my equipment and as such thought it would be an interesting article on why I've chosen a certain brand over another. When you’re shooting demanding outdoor, sports, and lifestyle campaigns across Europe, your gear needs to keep up. After years of experimenting with different systems, I’ve found that Sony consistently delivers the speed, reliability, and image quality my work demands, and fits the way I like to shoot.
My Core Sony Setup
I build my kit around the Sony A9iii bodies. Their autofocus and frame rate are unmatched for fast action, whether I’m tracking athletes in a marathon or capturing candid moments at a brand shoot. My go-to lenses:
28–70mm: Versatile for portraits and everyday scenes.
70–200mm: Essential for sports, events, and compressed compositions.
400mm: My choice for field sports and surfing, where reach and sharpness are critical.

Why Sony? (Performance in the Field)
Speed: Sony’s autofocus locks onto fast-moving subjects with minimal lag, letting me freeze action in trail running, football, or cycling. For sports, speed is everything and the A9iii delivers.
Durability: The weather sealing and build quality mean I can shoot in rain, snow, or dust without worrying about my gear. For outdoor campaigns, that peace of mind is huge.
Versatility: Sony’s lens range is vast, so I can always find the right tool for the job, whether I need a wide zoom for lifestyle, a fast prime for portraits, or a super-telephoto for the sidelines. Knowing I can expand my kit as needed, without switching systems, is a major plus.
Service: Sony’s global pro support program is a massive advantage. If anything goes wrong, I can get a replacement lens or camera body almost anywhere in the world. For a working photographer who travels, that level of backup is invaluable and gives me confidence to take on jobs in new places without worrying about downtime.
Video-Ready: I haven’t dipped my toes fully into video yet, but knowing I can switch to high-quality video at the press of a button is reassuring. Sony’s video capabilities are industry-leading, so when I’m ready to expand into motion work or deliver hybrid campaigns, I don’t need to change systems, just adapt my workflow.
While this is my personal preference, most major manufacturers now offer comparable pro-level options. But for my workflow, Sony feels like the right fit.
The Global Shutter Advantage (and Trade-Offs)
One of the standout features of the Sony A9iii is its global shutter, but it's also one the most critisized (happens when you are the first to release something i guess?). Unlike traditional rolling shutters, the global shutter captures the entire frame at once, eliminating distortion with fast-moving subjects and allowing for completely silent shooting. For me, this means I can freeze action in trail running, football, or urban cycling without any “jello” effect, and I never have to worry about banding from LED lights at indoor events.
The flip side? You lose a bit of dynamic range compared to Sony’s traditional sensors, and there’s a slight trade-off in high ISO performance. But for my style, where capturing real moments, movement, and authenticity matters more than ultra-high DR, so the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. The global shutter lets me work quickly and unobtrusively, whether I’m on the sidelines of a race or blending into the background at a lifestyle shoot. It’s become the perfect tool for my mix of sports, outdoor, and brand work.
Real-World Results
Sony gear has changed the way I work on location. During a recent trail running campaign in the Alps, the A9iii’s autofocus kept up with athletes darting through forests in low, shifting light, something my previous systems struggled with. At a rainy football match in Paris, the weather sealing meant I could keep shooting without a second thought, capturing both the action and the emotion as the game unfolded. For urban brand shoots, the silent shutter and compact lenses let me blend into the background and capture authentic, unguarded moments that clients love. Knowing I can rely on my kit, no matter the conditions or the speed of the action, has made me a more confident and creative photographer.

Workflow & Post-Production
Sony’s color science gives me a strong, true-to-life starting point in Lightroom. The RAW files are robust, they handle aggressive grading, color correction, and cropping without falling apart. This is essential for my style, which often involves pushing shadows and highlights to create cinematic, light-driven edits. The consistency of Sony files across bodies and lenses also makes batch editing for large campaigns much more efficient. I can deliver a cohesive look for brands, even when shooting in wildly different conditions.
Advice for Brands and Photographers
Choosing the right gear is about more than specs or brand loyalty, it’s about the confidence to deliver, no matter the brief. For brands, hiring a photographer who invests in reliable, professional equipment means faster turnaround, fewer reshoots, and images that meet the highest standards. For photographers, I’d say: pick the system that fits your workflow, your subjects, and your ambitions. For me, Sony offers the speed, support, and flexibility I need to deliver for clients, now and as my work evolves into new areas like video.
Final Thoughts
I’ll keep choosing Sony because it lets me focus on the story, not the equipment. If you’re curious about my setup or want to see what Sony can do for your next campaign, let’s connect.
